Tim Kilby, M.F.A. - What Constitutes Quality in Web-Based Training?

Tim Kilby, Founder of the Web-Based Training Information Center, the influential website first established online in 1994. Mr. Kilby envisioned distributed training applications when the Web was in its infancy and coined the term Web-based training (WBT). Consulted by business leaders, training developers, and academics worldwide, Tim has B.S. and M.F.A. degrees from Virginia Tech and Rochester Institute of Technology to support 8 years teaching and over 19 years developing computer applications, including technology training applications. He is frequently quoted in leading computer trade magazines and training journals.

Tim has been designing and producing CBT and WBT for the last six years with Raytheon Systems Company, where he is currently Technical Director. The training applications he has helped build encompass soft-skills and hard-skills training for Bellcore, Bell Atlantic, General Motors University, Skadden Arps, Internal Revenue Service, Department of Education, and National Fire Academy, among others. Mr. Kilby has received several awards for outstanding achievements in his field.


Kord Kutchins, M.A. - Case Study: Building a Case for Continued Investment in Corporate Online Learning

Mr. Kutchins, Director of Learning Technologies at Visual Services, Inc. (VSI) with their education and training department. At VSI Kord is responsible for the planning and growth of VSI's interactive-media training competency - including CD-ROM, computer- and web-based training projects. He will develop the company's internal interactive media resources, in addition to sales support to existing platform teams and new business groups.

Prior to joining VSI, Mr. Kutchins managed the Instructional Design Group at EMC Corporation in Hopkinton, Mass., where he designed and implemented numerous computer- and web-based training strategies for EMC University which supports one of the worlds fastest growing Fortune 500 companies.

Mr. Kutchins is presently completing his educational doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction and holds an M.A. in Instructional Systems Design from the University of Central Florida. In addition to teaching graduate-level courses at the university in multimedia design and development, Mr. Kutchins has over 6 years experience in designing, developing, managing and consulting in the arena of computer-based and web-based training for government, corporate and educational customers.


Maggie Martinez, Ph.D. - Design Perspectives for Successful Learning on the Web

Ms. Martinez, Vice President of Learning and Performance Improvement for The Training Place, Inc. has worked in the fields of learning, information, and technology for more than fifteen years. Previously she was the Worldwide Training and Certification Director for WordPerfect Corporation. Over the past eight years, Martinez has provided leadership, insight, and perspective on learning issues to major corporations as they cope with rapidly changing business opportunities and technological advancements. Ms. Martinez' professional focus has been to demystify the world of learning by pioneering new learning and performance paradigms for the 21st century.

In addition to her professional work, Ms. Martinez has a Ph. D. in Instructional Psychology and Technology, regularly presents at major conferences (ACM, STC, WebNet, and Influent), and publishes in academic and trade publications, (ASTD, Technical Communicator, and Journal of Computer Documentation). Recently she received financial awards from the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for her innovative Web learning design methodologies and intentional learning research program. She continues to work on innovative WBT designs (that identify and support individual learning differences) and distance learning standards, products, and services.


Robin Mason, Ph.D. - Appropriate Forms of Assessment for Online Courses

Dr. Mason, a Senior Lecturer within the Institute of Educational Technology where she is Head of the Centre for Information Technology in Education at the Distance Learning Open University . Dr. Mason is a specialist in the use of interactive multimedia and telecommunications technologies for education and training.

She was one of the early pioneers in the use of computer conferencing, completing her doctorate on the UK Open University's first ever use of the medium for large scale distance teaching in 1988. She has continued to carry out evaluations both for her own institution and for many other training and educational organisations in the UK and abroad.

Her expertise as an evaluator is enhanced by her experience as a teacher and presenter using various telecommunications technologies: computer conferencing, the Web and videoconferencing. She specialises in courses for distance educators and train-the-trainer staff development programmes. Dr. Mason's most recent publication is Globalising Education: Trends and Applications, published by Routledge.


Patti Shank, MA Ed. - Strategies for Facilitating Asynchronous Instructor-led Online Courses

Ms. Shank, Contributing Writer to Lakewood Publications, "Technology for Learning Newsletter" and has recently contributed a chapter in the upcoming book: Web-Based Computer Conferencing, published by Style Publishing. Ms. Shank is nationally known for her independent and insightful (and often outspoken) thinking about education, training and performance, and is an often requested speaker at national training conferences. Patti began Insight Ed, an instructional design and training firm, in 1995 to help others augment their training and education efforts through innovation and technology. She has helped numerous universities and corporations assess, develop, integrate, implement, and evaluate distance education initiatives.

Patti has been designing, facilitating and managing innovative instructor-led and technology-based educational programming for more than 13 years. She received her Masterms degree in Educational Technology Leadership from George Washington University, where her project team won the Jere Trout student project award. She is currently a faculty member at George Washington University and The University of Colorado. Formerly, as Manager of Health Education and Training for a large healthcare organization, her department's creative programming won accolades and awards from accreditation and national training organizations.


Harvi Singh - Implementing Enterprise Learning Management Systems

Mr. Singh, is President of Empower Corporation, a leader in online learning and human performance technology. Harvi founded Empower Corporation in 1993 and has produced and directed over 100 training and educational products on CD-ROM and the Internet. He has consulted with major corporations such as Microsoft, SUN Microsystems, GlaxoWellcome, ICL/Fujitsu, Department of Defense, and ORACLE.

Harvi has been involved in the design and development of several educational technology projects in the last few years including projects at Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow research lab. Currently his interests include designing innovative and creative multimedia training and education applications on the Internet, Intranets and interactive television. Harvi received a bachelor's degree in computer science at North Carolina State University and graduate degrees in both computer science and education from Stanford University.
